AUSTIN – Nearly two million Texans cast their vote to approve the creation of a new constitutionally protected fund for Texas water through Proposition 6, one of fourteen propositions on the Texas ballot.
More than seventy-seven percent of Texas voters cast a “yes” vote to unlock $1 billion to help finance water supply development, conservation efforts, infrastructure repairs, and meet rural community needs, making for the largest voter-approved investment in Texas water since 2013.
This spending package and the creation of the Texas Water Fund were born from the 88th Texas Legislature’s passage of Senate Bill 28 and its accompanying Senate Joint Resolution 75, a bipartisan effort that responded to the need for more water supply and investment in aging infrastructure.
“We’re encouraged to see Texans take seriously the need to invest in our water future with the passage of Proposition 6 in 253 of our 254 counties,” said Sarah Schlessinger, CEO of Texas Water Foundation. “In addition to ushering in $1 billion for a broad range of water needs, this vote sends a powerful message to the Texas Legislature that water is widely important to Texans.”
